A one-time evil cultist, Death’s Chaplain (as he calls himself) sacrificed his entire following to gain mystical powers.

History[]

During his college years, Garth Ellis fell in with a supposed “black magic” cult; while it seemed to be mostly harmless, he at least found it to be an amusing distraction from his mundane life. While he gladly followed their rituals, he didn’t initially believe in the dark powers they claimed to possess. However, as his time with them continued, he found that there was more to them then he initially expected.

The cult’s beliefs and practices were, in turn, transcribed from an older cult that had died out during the late 30s. The only difference was that the idiots who had taken up its mantle didn’t have the force of belief necessary to empower their rituals, and failed to recognise that the tome they read from was actually a legitimate spellbook. As he began to read through it, Garth found a way to reawaken its dark powers.

He convinced the cult to perform a new ritual, one that would bind their souls to the book and empower both it and the one who read it. The cult agreed, unaware of the true nature of his claim and thinking it just another joke. However, as the ritual reached its climax and Garth spoke the incantations, the truth became all to clear. The members of the cult were slain, their souls torn from their body and imprisoned in the book, which in turn bestowed its powers on him.

Granted foul magical powers through the ritual, Garth also learned the truth behind it; the book was tied to a powerful demonic entity which sought to reach the mortal plane. By performing the ritual, Garth had become its agent. Naming himself “Death’s Champlain”, he set out to do his newfound master’s bidding, aiming to bring his master to this world, and announcing the beginning of the end times.

Early on he found She Devil, another villain with a demonic origin. The two of them agreed to work together, having a common purpose as well as a common source to their powers. They felt that by aiding each other, they would be able to further increase their powers,, making them unmatched beings of truly devastating power.

Powers/Abilities[]

The ritual transformed Garth from a two-bit cultist to a genuine force of magical power, imbuing him with dark magical energies and the knowledge of how to use them to their fullest. He can cast a wide array of offensive spells, capable of directly harming his opponents, or other abilities suck as weakening them or binding them in place. While he does have a fair knowledge of other spells, he simply prefers the offensive ones for their direct, deadly effect.

The one exception is what is possibly his most powerful spell; the ability to animate and control a handful of the living dead. While the results are little more then usually shambling Zombies or skeletons, their numbers and shock value can be a decisive factor.

What he isn’t aware of is the fact that, since he has begun working with She-Devil, his powers have been decreasing as she inadvertently drains them out of him.

Personality[]

Death’s Chaplin is a stern, dour and serious individual. He takes everything seriously, greeting it with a sternly, stone-faced resolve. He does not abide by joking around, and cannot stand to be mocked or insulted himself. Usually such mockery is met with threats, and then rather quickly escalates to physical violence. He has a very high opinion of himself and his abilities, and feels that he demands respect.

He cannot stand to be insulted or mocked. Making fun of his name is the easiest way to launch him into a berserker rage.

He is very loyal to She Devil, but tends to see himself as being “above” the rest of The Underworld; certainly he sees them as being rabble fit only to serve rather then any true equals.

Appearance[]

Garth is a large and intimidating looking man with heavyset features that are somewhat offset by his limp black hair. His “costume” such as it is consists of a black suit and pants with matching longcoat, broad-brimmed hat and a preacher’s collar. While he doesn’t wear a mask, he does wear white facepaint adorned with a striking black pattern.
