Drift, formerly known as the supervillain Deadlock is a one-time ninja assassin who has tried to reform and turn his life around. However, he still faces overt hostility form both his would-be allies and his one-time compatriots.

History[]

From an early age, Shane McCarthy was obsessed with all things Japanese; the language, the culture, the pop culture, the traditions, the cars, the martial arts, the schoolgirls’ underwear you could buy from vending machines and so forth. Specifically, he became fascinated with the traditions of the ninja and their associated mystique. Unfortunately, growing up in New Jersey meant he was rather far from the heartland of Ninja culture. Or so it seemed.

Unbeknownst to him, his next door neighbour was actually a retired Imperial Japanese Secret Service Ninja who had been hiding out since the end of World War II. Having noted young Shane’s interest and lack of moral objectivity, he felt that he may have a potential heir to his secrets. Taking him into his confidence, he revealed the truth to his would-be protégé.

To Shane, it was a fulfilment of all his desires; he gladly took in everything his master taught him, becoming a more then capable student while gladly overlooking the fact that he was being taught by a wanted war criminal. Having completed his training, his master instructed him to take a codename; Shane deciding to call himself Deadlock.

Armed with a pair of blades given to him by his master, he set about on a career of crime. Working as a freelance assassin, he built up a reputation for his cruel and merciless methods. At the same time, he tried to establish something of a mystique; he claimed to be from a “lost tribe”, and possibly their last member.

However, things took an unexpected turn when he was given a particular task – to assassinate his one-time master. He refused, and his employer, the supervillain Turmoil decided to kill him for his defiance. After being assumed dead, Deadlock began to realise exactly what he had been doing all these years and the consequences of his actions. He decided to atone for his past actions, to walk the path of the hero.

Now calling himself Drift, he resurfaced in Millennium City, engaging in a one-man war on crime. At the same time, he made contact with several superhero groups, trying to find one that would accept him in spite of his past. However, none would want to associate with him, and more then one tried to arrest him on-site. About the only positive that anyone had to say about him came from Hotshot who commented “his feet don’t smell.”

Regardless, Drift has continued his one-man war on crime, determined to make up for all the evil he has committed in past and find some degree of acceptance.

Powers[]

For all his numerous character faults, Drift is still a very capable and skilled fighter. Years of training in ninjitsue have given him an impressive repertoire of skills and manoeuvrers that he employs to deadly effect. Armed with a pair of katanas, he has the ability to strike suddenly then vanish. Even when unarmed, he is still deadly, being more then capable in hand to hand combat.

Aside form his martial skills he is also a master of not being seen; he can seme to vanish into thin air, and escape seemingly impossible situations. However, for some inexplicable reason, he often chooses to stand around and look smug where anyone can see him.

Personality[]

Drift likes to claim that he has reformed, putting his criminal past behind him and instead atoning for his mistakes. Unfortunately, instead, he has a somewhat deserved reputation for being an insufferable pain. While he does indeed stand on the sides of law and justice (mostly), he also likes to run his mouth off about how cool he is, how cool his swords are, how amazing his skills with his swords are and so on. Whenever possible he will make some grandstanding move just simply to show off and attract attention, regardless of how appropriate it may be.

May find this grating for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the fact that a one-time foe is pointing out how easily he can dispatch us foes – and uncomfortably reminding many that they could be the ones on the receiving ends of the swords as well.

Despite all that has happened, he still maintains his obsession with Japanese culture, ninjas and the martial world. He also has a fascination for street racing that he also doesn’t mind talking about at length to anyone who will listen. The net result is that many call him a “white trash ninja”, a term he hates.

Appearance[]

Shane McCarthy is a tall, lean man in his mid 20s. He has blue eyes and long blond hair worn in a ponytail. He sports several tattoos of various Japanese characters which could mean anything. As Drift, he wears a largely white costume with a red flame pattern on the sleeves and legs, and the word “Drift” written on the arms in Japanese.
