The Scarlet Mask was a costumed crime-fighter who fought criminals and other threats from the 1930s to the 1950s.
Born in 1910, Jim Nedor was raised in Chicago during the early part of the century. Joining the Chicago police, he managed to remain rigidly honest, despite the prevalence of crime and corruption in the city. Outraged at his honesty, a mob boss ordered a hit on him; however, things didn’t go as planned. Jim was left alive and unharmed, while his partner was killed. Outraged at what had happened, Jim vowed revenge on the criminals responsible.
Knowing full well that they would be untouchable to the city’s police forces, he instead decided to fight crime in his own way. Donning a mask and a brightly coloured suit, he took the name “Scarlet Mask”, becoming the scourge of the city’s underworld. For several years he fought mobsters and other criminal threats, gladly doing what he felt the police force couldn’t. He quickly developed a reputation as a dashing and daring hero, one who fought for the common man.
With the outbreak of World War II, he and several other masked crimefighters joined forces, forming the Secret Squadron. Together, they fought domestic threats such as spies and saboteurs, as well as occasionally facing enemy agents in Europe and the Pacific. At the end of the war, the surviving members of the Squadron agreed to stay together to help each other in the fight against crime.
It wasn’t to last; the changing political situation at home and abroad saw the squadron’s membership dwindle as its members chose to retire rather then continue to lead suddenly unacceptable double lives. Realising the inevitable, the remaining members of the Squadron chose to disband the team. Scarlet Mask would continue to fight crime for a few more years before he retired in 1955.
However, that was not the end of the Scarlet Mask. In 1965, a new Scarlet Mask would appear. Intrigued, Jim tracked him down, finding that he was a young man who had been inspired by Jim’s exploits and chosen to fight crime under his old identity. Impressed with his youth and vigour, as well as his determination, Jim chose to quietly aid the second Scarlet Mask, helping to train and equip him, and ensuring a continuity of the identity. To the world at large, it seemed that the Scarlet Mask had come out from retirement, reinvigorated for his years away.
Jim would continue to aid the Scarlet Mask for the next few decades, until his failing health forced him to completely retire in 1985. He died peacefully in 1999.
Jim had no superhuman powers or abilities as such. However, in his prime, he was a superb athlete in the peak of physical condition. He was a skilled boxer, as well as having a good knowledge of other fighting techniques, allowing him to fight toe to toe with most mundane threats and hold his own against a few early superhumans. In addition to these skills, he had an excellent knowledge of criminology, and was a rather skilled detective, allowing him to find his foes and determine their motives.
Aside from his training, Scarlet Mask also carried several gadgets that he used to aid himself in his battles. He used a grappling gun as well as smoke pellet bombs, and had a specially modified (and very distinctive) roadster that he used for transportation.
Jim maintained a reputation as an honest, hard-working man, with something of a reputation for being rather grim and humourless. Amongst his fellow officers, he was seen as reliable and determined, but not very sociable or pleasant to be around. He worked hard to create this image in order to hide his identity and throw off those who would try to hunt him down.
As the Scarlet Mask, however, he was flamboyant and dashing, with a boisterous and dramatic flair. Witty and sophisticated, he would always have time to quip a one-liner at a foe as he knocked them out, and did his best to impress the ladies – even if they were female villains he was fighting. Towards the end of his career, his mood mellowed somewhat, however it did retain a lot of its original tone.
During his time as the Scarlet Mask, Jim Nedor was a rugged, square-jawed man with short black hair and sharp blue eyes. Initially, he wore a red suit and jacket with a hat as well as his distinctive crimson mask; however, form World War II onwards, he instead wore a red jumpsuit with a white trim and the mask.
